By Christian Irwin

If you're writing to make your site rank better in the search engines, it's essential that the content you publish is unique and valuable. Now, when we talk about "original content", it's something that you've written out of your own knowledge, with your personal touch. In some cases, however, you may be compelled to write about a topic that you're unfamiliar with. Research becomes essential at times like this. There are, of course, many places you can do research online, but if you want your content to really make an impact you have to know where to search for the best information.

Video sharing websites like YouTube are chock-full of useful knowledge that you can use in your research. There are videos available on virtually any subject you can dream of and you can use the information in these videos to educate yourself on the topic you are targeting. For example, let's say you want to create content on "weight training" but you don't really know much about it, all you have to do is have a look on YouTube for videos covering this topic and write down some important points to find. These points will help you create your own content, but make sure you add your own personal touch to them to make your content unique.

Find the well regarded authority sites in your niche, as these are also great for research. You can be sure that when you see content published on an authority site that it's been well researched. So the content on such large authority sites will tend to be much more reliable than what you'd find on a random blog that may have been put up yesterday. For information on stocks and investing, for example, you could visit an authority site like Motleyfool.com that has many articles and resources on these topics. You can get a lot of good research information from such sites.

All we have time and space for are cursory overviews of the various methods and points we discuss. So we would encourage you to investigate further on your own, and think in terms of optimizing all the various components of any approach.

Lastly, question & answer sites like Yahoo! Answers help you find a lot of information that users submit in response to the questions that are posted.
