Adsense, Nice or Bad?

By Eduardo Costa

I have often pondered this question?

Here are my own basic thoughts on the complex topic.

Most websites I visit have some kind of adsense system running; I would predict that some of these are generally making great money from the Google system. Certainly websites with over 1000 site visitors every day should receive a small amount of revenue.

Typically I believe the adsense system is a great one, however like most things right now the adsense system has been misused by people who fully understand how search engines work; sad to say these individuals have already made their money. These persons have used lots of tactics in the past to boost their sites page ranking, thus ensuring extra visitors, more viewers means more income from the system. These websites are typically kept open for several months and after that closed down, with the next one quickly opened up. This practice has been going on for years. The sites are even sold daily on EBay; I would imagine they're just about to be banned.

What usually happens when a number of people misuse a system is it leads to others suffering, and in this case it has occurred. Google is sandboxing new websites for longer. Saying this corporation had to act, they have now introduced the 'Big Daddy' update. This update has impacted sites that have large numbers of irrelevant links or millions of irrelevant web pages. Sad to say it has also impacted the ranking of original businesses; hopefully this is just a short term blip. My own opinion is the internet has to be a level playing field for everyone; however I somehow doubt it ever would be.

I believe there's a place for adsense on most sites as long as it is discrete, well setup and does not look out of place, (fonts, colours etc.), The primary thing to think about is what do you want from your viewers. Most websites offer a product to potential buyers. This causes the dilemma of balancing potential revenue from adsense against getting rid of a potential consumer, what I mean by this is, a website visitor might be interested in your site, however you might lose all of them instantly to Google. This is why in my opinion is if your site has a product you're selling, you need to never employ adsense on your homepage.

In summary I like the system, it is simple to set up and user friendly. I hope Google manage to filter out the unethical element who in the end will only spoil things for everyone.
